Turn Your iPod Touch into an iPhone

What You'll Need
1.) A jailbroken iPod touch or iPhone. If you haven't already jailbroken your device, don't worry—it'll just take 45 seconds.

2.) iPhone headphones with mics don't work with the iPod touch, so if you're using an iPod touch you'll need a Touchmod mic. The Touchmod mics come in a variety of flavors, from the simple dongle that plugs into the syncing port to the headphone-and-mic combo that works much like the iPhone headphones. The hardware will set you back somewhere between $50 and $60.

3.) The freeware SIP-VoIP application. Read on for details for installing SIP-VoIP below

Install SIP-VoIP
Assuming you've got the hardware you need and you've prepared your device, now it's time to install the VoIP application. If you don't yet have a mic, you can test that SIP-VoIP is successfully making calls before you purchase it.
I'm going to cover two different ways of installing SIP-VoIP. The first and easiest method is with Installer.app, the program that is automatically installed when you jailbreak your iPod. The second method is more difficult, but it's good to have around in case you run into errors .

Method 1 - Install SIP-VoIP with Installer.app: First, since SIP-VoIP isn't found in Installer.app by default, you need to add the Touchmods repository to Installer. To do so, launch Installer and head to the Sources tab. Now tap Edit -> Add, and type http://touchmods.net/rep.xml into the Add Source dialog. Hit OK, and Installer will refresh your sources, this time including your new Touchmods repository.

Now go to the Install tab and find the entry labeled Touchmods. Inside you'll see an app called Touchmods SIP-VoIP. Go ahead and install SIP-VoIP by tapping the entry, tapping the install button, and then verifying that you want to install this application from an "untrusted" source.

This is by far the easiest method for installing SIP-VoIP, but I had trouble with the latest version of SIP-VoIP (version 1.2) on my iPod touch, so I had to install a previous version (1.1). Since you can only install the latest with Installer, I'll also demonstrate how to install older versions of SIP-VoIP. I'd recommend trying it the easy way first, then moving to the following method if you have trouble. If you're taking the easy route the first time around, skip to the Set Up an SIP Account section below.

Method 2 - Install SIP-VoIP over SSH: To install previous versions of SIP-VoIP, you'll need to first install OpenSSH through Installer.app (you can find it under Install -> System). Now you'll need to connect to your iPod using a desktop FTP client that supports SFTP connections (like FileZilla for Windows or Cyberduck for OS X). This will allow you to browse and copy files to your iPod like you would if you could access the disk as an external hard drive on your computer.

To connect to your device from your computer, you'll need to know your iPod touch's or iPhone's IP address. You can find this by opening the Settings app, tapping Wi-Fi, and then tapping the blue arrow next to the network you're connected to.

Now that you've got that, start up your FTP client of choice, enter the IP address as you server, and use root for your username and alpine as your password. Once connected, navigate to the Applications folder (just above the root folder). That's where your iPhone and iPod touch keep all of their applications. From here it's a simple matter of dragging and dropping the appropriate SIP-VoIP app to the applications folder.

For this article, I'm using the 1.1 version of SIP-VoIP, which you can download here. Once downloaded, unzip the file and then drag and drop the SIP-VoIP.app file to your Applications folder. Finally, restart your iPod or iPhone and the new app should show up on your home screen.

Set Up an SIP Account
Unfortunately the SIP-VoIP app doesn't work with the most popular VoIP app Skype (it uses the SIP protocol), which means you'll have to set up an account with another service to use the app. Luckily there are tons of options out there that can work with SIP-VoIP. I used a service called FreeCall, so that's what I'll highlight in my examples, but the Touchmods blog lists a handful of alternatives.
If you want to follow along exactly with my settings, head to the FreeCall signup page and register for an account. After you register, you'll need to buy some minutes for your call time. FreeCall is an international service, so when it asks for your cell phone (to which it sends an SMS confirmation), you'll need to include your country code; for example, it would look something like 0015555551234 if you're in the US. The minimum purchase with FreeCall is 10 euros, which amounts to around $16. Once you've purchased some calling time with FreeCall, it's time to enter your setup configuration in SIP-VoIP and start making calls.

Set Up SIP-VoIP to Make Calls
Finally, we're ready to set up SIP-VoIP with the SIP provider you registered with above. Launch the app from your iPod touch or iPhone's home screen, then tap on Settings in the bottom right corner. You'll see a very rudimentary form where you'll enter the settings for the SIP account you set up above.

If you used FreeCall like, enter your FreeCall username and password in the first two fields (other services will use the number they've assigned you as the username), then sip.voiparound.com in the field labeled SIP-Server (see screenshot). There are more fields, but for FreeCall that should be all you need. Hit Save to save your settings—you may have to hit return on the iPod's keyboard to dismiss it and see the Save button—and then tap the dial tab to head to the dialpad.

Before you make your first call, you have to connect the application to the SIP server, so click the button labeled "connect to sip server" in the lower left. If all goes well, it'll connect without a hitch. (This is where I ran into some problems with version 1.2 on the iPod touch. 1.2 connected without issue from my iPhone, but I kept getting connection error messages with 1.2 on my iPod touch. If you're having similar problems, installing version 1.1 may help.) If it connected successfully, all you've got to do is dial your number (country code included, depending on which service you go with) and hit the call button.

Set up Inbound number
Your FreeCall account only handles outbound calls, but you're not out of luck if you want to add inbound functionality to your iPod touch. You can register your FreeCall SIP account with other services, like IPKall, to get a free phone number that will ring your iPod touch. (The only catch is that you're limited to a state of Washington area code). I won't go into details on setting up an inbound number, but you can find more details from this post at the Touchmods blog.
The SIP-VoIP app has been in development for a while, and though it's still not much to look at, it seems to be improving over time. The iPhone and iPod touch 2.0 firmware will officially hit the streets sometime in June with support for third party apps through Apple, so who knows what kind of VoIP apps we'll see when that time comes.

Whether or not we'll ever see Skype or another VoIP app officially supported for the iPhone (Apple says they'll allow VoIP over Wi-Fi), SIP-VoIP is already there. The experience with it has been hit-or-miss, and it's got miles to go before it's the friendliest app around, but whether you'd like to make international calls for cheap or you just want to want to reach out and touch someone from your iPod touch, the folks at Touchmods and SIP-VoIP are already providing the tools to do just that.

No, you don't get visual voicemail, text messaging, or a built-in camera, but you do get to make and receive phone calls from your iPod touch—which in itself shows a lot of promise.

HTC Firestone smartphone possibly unveiled in a rendering

A rendering of what is believed to be the HTC Firestone has surfaced at WMpoweruser recently, showing off the device's supposed 3.6-inch WVGA (800x480 pixels) resolution touchscreen display. The Firestone, the update of the Touch HD, is believed to be powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, with HTC's TouchFLO user interface, as well.

The HTC Firestone is though to feature an 8 megapixel camera, with a microSD card slot for extra storage, and the 600MHz Qualcomm 8250 processor, for a zippy experience. The Firestone is also believed to sport a standard 3.5mm audio port, accelerometer, and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support for stereo headphones. Rumors suggest that the HTC Firestone is planned for an August 2009 launch.

HTC launches Hero Android smartphone with custom HTC Sense UI and Flash support

HTC launched its third Android powered smartphone, the HTC Hero. The HTC Hero makes use of the new HTC Sense user interface, which makes the Hero the first Android device on the market to sport a custom user interface. For those that follow Android more closely, HTC Sense will be recognized as the "Rosie" user interface that was leaked through some Hero ROMs a few weeks back.

I had the chance to see HTC Sense in action on an HTC Hero some time ago, and I can vouch for the quality of the HTC enhancements to Android. Not only does HTC provide a wide assortment of new home screen widgets, but the company also has included a new "Scenes" mode that lets users define multiple layouts to be used, such as one for work, and one for play. The system is somewhat similar to the mode switching found on some recent Nokia S60 smartphones.

Other new features include integration with Facebook and Flickr, including linking your contacts with their own Facebook and Flickr feeds, so you can not only see their contact info in the contacts app, but also quickly view their Facebook updates and recent Flickr photos. Other tweaks have been made to the phone dialer, including T9 contact searching, and to the web browser. The web browser tweaks include multi-touch zooming control, a new bookmark manager, and Adobe Flash based full-screen video support.

In terms of specs, the Hero features a 3.2-inch 320 x 480 (Half-VGA) capacitive touchscreen(INFO) display, just like the Magic and G1, but also includes a special anti-fingerprint coating. Unlike the older devices, however, the Hero receives a new 5 megapixel camera (with geo-tagging) and an actual 3.5mm headphone port - no more headphone adapters required. Other features of note include aGPS(INFO) and HTC Footprints, a built-in digital compass for helping with Google Maps, and a new search button.

The search button brings up results from a new, more powerful search system that looks not only in the phone's emails, contacts, and other built-in data like you would expect, but also searches Twitter (and, presumably, Google).

The Hero is expected to go on sale across Europe in July, and in Asia later in the summer. HTC has promised that a dedicated North American version will be available later in 2009. The white version of the device actually includes teflon in order to make the paint not only soft, but durable. No pricing has been announced at this time, but T-Mobile and Orange in Europe are the first networks expected to offer the phone.

Motorola Morrison for T-Mobile possibly revealed in photo

A photo of what is believed by some to be the Motorola Morrison for T-Mobile popped up at Mini-Suit over the weekend, showing off a white and blue color scheme and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

This unidentified cell phone is possibly Motorola's first Android-powered smartphone for T-Mobile. Unfortunately, no other details are known about the Motorola Morrison at this time, and as Android Authority points out, it appears that some Android-specific hardware keys are not seen on the device in the photo.

T-Mobile launches myTouch 3G Android powered smartphone

T-Mobile USA officially launched its second Android powered smartphone, the myTouch 3G. The myTouch 3G is a device based on the popular HTC Magic that has been selling in other parts of the world on Vodafone and other networks for a few months now. It sports a large 3.2-inch half-VGA (320 x 480 pixel) capacitive touchscreen(INFO) display and trackball, just like the T-Mobile G1, but lacks the older handset's hardware QWERTY keyboard.

The myTouch 3G features GSM/EDGE connectivity as well support for 3G HSDPA networks, as its name suggests. Built-in WiFi is also there for when 3G data isn't available. The myTouch 3G features a full HTML web browser, Google's voice powered search, as well as YouTube, Google Maps, and Picasa integration.

Multimedia features include a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera and a music player application that supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, OGG, and RM media files. Photos, videos, and music can all be stored on the myTouch 3G's included 4GB microSD memory card. New applications can be easily found on the Android Market app store, and the phone also support Bluetooth wireless accessories, including wireless stereo headphones.

For the email hungry out there, the myTouch 3G includes not only Google's Gmail application, but also built-in Microsoft Exchange server support, just as we've seen on some of the Asian market versions of the HTC Magic. Instant messaging support for Gtalk, AIM, Windows Live, and Yahoo! messaging is also included, and there is even a voice dialing application and speakerphone for truly hands free phone calls.

T-Mobile has said that the myTouch 3G will be available for pre-order by existing T-Mobile customers starting on July 8, 2009 for US$199.99 with a two year contract extension. The device is set to be available in stores in "early" August in white, black, and merlot colors schemes.

Apple warns Palm Pre about playing with iTunes

By now it’s no secret that Palm (NSDQ: PALM) programmed the Palm Pre to trick iTunes into thinking the Pre is an iPod-like device, allowing it to easily sync with your iTunes media library. But, that obviously isn’t sitting too well with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s higher-ups. To that end, Apple has posted a new support page that is presumably aimed directly at the Palm Pre.

In this new support page, Apple outlines their policy on “iTunes and unsupported third-party digital media players.” In a thinly-veiled reference to the Palm Pre, Apple says that it is aware that “some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software.” Apple not one to let the Palm Pre to tread on turf reserved for Apple iPods and the iPhone, makes it clear that “Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players.”

The new support page could just be legal maneuvering to cover Apple’s ass when they decide to update iTunes and kill the Palm Pre’s compatibility with iTunes. Should some sort of “horrible software bug” start bricking Palm Pre that try to sync with future versions of iTunes, Apple might just be able to say “I told you so.”

Breaking up with your girlfriend over SMS: A compromise

Enjoy your day.

Next year’s iPhone: HD video recording, HDMI output, 833 MHz?

While there are still people queueing up for the iPhone 3G S, I’m going to start speculating about the next iPhone. Thanks to Rapid Repair, we know the processor inside the 3G S is the Samsung S5PC100. Features include:

Operates up to 833MHz

720p multiformat codec (MFC) video engine which ensures smooth 30fps video encoding and playblack

Supports three types of TV out interface (NTSC/PAL/HDMI)

BlackBerry 8230 Goes Live on Verizon

As expected, the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Pearl Flip 8230 from Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is now available and ready to pick up for $79.99 after rebates. Frankly, I think that price point is still a bit of a gyp considering T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) is selling their 3G-less counterpart for almost half the price, but hey, at the sub $100-level, you’re kind of splitting hairs. I took a look at Telus (NYSE: TU)’ version not long ago, and walked away relatively happy. The form factor is a big departure for RIM, and a fine stepping stone for those who want to start tapping the functionality of BlackBerry without carrying around a big businessy thing with a full QWERTY keyboard; in fact, the external screen actually adds a surprising amount of functionality

T-Mobile’s next Android phone: G1 Touch

It would appear to be a great bit of kit, with a 3.5″ display, 3.2MP camera, and running on a Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) chipset. If the information is correct, then a 1500mAH battery will be on board, which should give is a decent runtime (for comparison, the iPhone battery weighs in around 1300mAH).

I have to say I really like the look of this phone - and if it ends up coming out, I might strongly consider getting a T-Mobile contract to get a lil’ Android-gadget love!

Apple iPhone 3G S available today, analysts predicting 500k first weekend sales

Today the Apple iPhone 3G S, the newest iteration of the popular touchscreen smartphone, will be available to consumers as we reported it would, earlier this month.

The iPhone 3G S differs little technologically and cosmetically from its predecessors but it does include several new features. Users will enjoy user interface speeds that are twice as fast as the previous offering and HSDPA data connectivity for download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps. The device features a 3 megapixel camera with an autofocus lens, and users can record and edit video on the new device.

A digital compass, voice controls, slightly improved battery life, and all of the features found in the new iPhone OS 3.0 firmware are also included. iPhone OS 3.0 supports MMS and tethering as long as the carrier supports those features.

Piper Jaffray Senior Analyst Gene Munster told Fortune yesterday that he estimates Apple will sell 500,000 iPhone 3G S units this weekend, half as many when the iPhone 3G launched last July. He attributes the difference to the fact that Apple is launching the device in 15 less countries globally. A second analyst is predicting sales of 500-700,000, according to the publication.

The iPhone 3G S is available with 32GB of internal memory for $299 or 16GB of internal memory for $199 with a two-year customer agreement. The standard iPhone 3G is now available for $99.

T-Mobile and HTC announce the T-Mobile Dash 3G

Today T-Mobile announced the July availability of its new T-Mobile Dash 3G, the follow-up to the popular Dash smartphone. The Dash 3G is based on the HTC developed Snap, versions of which are showing up on Sprint, Verizon, and in other parts of the world. The Dash 3G is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard Edition smartphone, and the very first to be offered by T-Mobile USA that supports its new 3G data network.

Highlights of the Dash 3G include the new trackball controller and its new QWERTY keyboard with offset keys. The Dash 3G also comes with GPS support and the ability to work on WiFi based wireless networks. Oddly, the official Dash 3G press release made no mention of support for T-Mobile's UMA-based HotSpot @Home service, which is supported by the Windows Mobile-powered T-Mobile/HTC Shadow that was released earlier this year, and allows consumers to place calls over WiFi connections.

Like all Windows Mobile devices, the Dash 3G supports Microsoft Exchange servers for over the air synchronization of contacts, appointments, and tasks, as well as push email. Its 2.4-inch display offers QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) resolution, and the phone also features a microSDHC(INFO) expansion card slot for plenty of storage potential. Bluetooth 2.0 is also on board, as is a fixed focus 2.0 megapixel camera.

The Dash 3G measures 117mm x 61mm x 12mm (4.6in x 2.4in x .5in) in size and should weigh in at around 120g (4.2oz). It is thought to offer up 192MB of application RAM, like the HTC Snap, but T-Mobile and HTC have yet to release final specs for the Dash 3G. No pricing information has been

Motorola's new Endeavor HX1 Bluetooth headset uses bone conduction technology

Today, Motorola unveiled its new Endeavor HX1 Bluetooth headset with stealth mode, which uses bone conduction technology to eliminate background noise and amplify the user's voice. With the flip of a switch, the Endeavor HX1 is able to activate an in-ear sensor that analyzes vibrations and converts them to speech.

The Motorola Endeavor HX1 is also remarkably small, measuring in at only 47mm x 18mm x 12mm (1.9in x 0.7in x .5in) and only weighs 13g (.5oz). The headset includes a set of reversible ear hooks, so you can wear it on either ear, and also uses Motorola's CrystalTalk technology. The Endeavor HX1 is expected to be available in Asia in July 2009, with other regional availability to follow.

Samsung announces first solar powered GSM Cellphone

Samsung is going green with it’s first solar-powered GSM cell phone. Known by the catchy moniker “Crest Solar,” the E1107 (as it is officially known) has a large solar cell on the back of the handset and can provide up to 10 minutes of talk time for every hour it sits in the sun charging up on your basic sunny day.

In addition to it’s environmental bonafides, the camera is dual band for use in both the 900 Mhz and 1800 Mhz range. Other features include all the usual refinements including an FM radio and MP3 ringtones, and games. It can even work as a flashlight but you can bet that’s a battery killer which will force you to wait until sunrise to recharge without the AC adapter. Security features include Samsung’s proprietary Mobile Tracker - which will alert the authorities in the event of an emergency with an SOS like signal, and there’s also a fake call feature for use when wanting to disengage from a sticky situation with a well timed phone call. Lastly, there’s specialized features for things like specialized markets and even religious preferences.

Cost is currently $59 US for the Asian market with no word on when it’ll be available in the Western world.
