Photos of Samsung's Omnia II smartphone for Verizon

While attending a Samsung press event in New York city, we had the chance to sit down for a spell with the new Samsung Omnia II, a Windows Mobile powered smartphone that is headed to Verizon's network here in the U.S.

The Omnia II features a 800 x 480 pixel AMOLED(INFO) touchscreen display that sports the new TouchWiz 2.0 user interface. TouchWiz 2.0 on Windows Mobile replaces a lot of the stock Windows Mobile 6.1 user interface aspects with slicker looking Samsung developed controls. TouchWiz 2.0 features multiple desktops for widgets, and replaces both the Start menu and Settings menus. All in all, its a very good looking UI.

While the Omnia II will initially ship with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition, Samsung has assured us that it will be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when that becomes available.

Here are some live photos of the Omnia II from the event
